Dynamical Regge Calculus as Lattice Quantum Gravity

چکیده

We propose a hybrid model of simplicial quantum gravity by performing at once dynamical triangulations and Regge calculus. A motive for the hybridization is to give a dynamical description of topology-changing processes of Euclidean spacetime. In addition, lattice diffeomorphisms as invariance of the simplicial geometry are generated by certain elementary moves in the model. We attempt also a lattice-theoretic derivation of the black hole entropy using the symmetry. Furthermore, numerical simulations of 3D pure gravity are carried out, exhibiting a large hysteresis between two phases. We also measure geometric properties of Euclidean ‘time slice’ based on a geodesic distance, resulting in a fractal structure in the strong-coupling phase. Our hybrid model not only reproduces numerical results consistent with those of dynamical triangulations and Regge calculus, but also opens a possibility of studying quantum black hole physics on the lattice. ∗e-mail: [email protected]

Discretization and Continuum Limit of Quantum Gravity on a Four-Dimensional Space-Time Lattice

The Regge Calculus is a powerful method to approximate a continuous manifold by a simplicial lattice, keeping the connectivities of the underlying lattice fixed and taking the edge lengths as degrees of freedom. The Discrete Regge Model limits the choice of the link lengths to a finite number. We examine the phase structure of Standard Regge Calculus in four dimensions and compare our Monte Car...

Latticing Quantum Gravity

I discuss some aspects of a lattice approach to canonical quantum gravity in a connection formulation, discuss how it differs from the continuum construction, and compare the spectra of geometric operators – encoding information about components of the spatial metric – for some simple lattice quantum states. 1 To appear in the Proceedings of the 2nd Conference on Constrained Dynamics and Quantu...

On the Definition of the Partition Function in Quantum Regge Calculus

We argue that the definition of the partition function used recently to demonstrate the failure of Regge calculus is wrong. In fact, in the one-dimensional case, we show that there is a more natural definition, with which one can reproduce the correct results. ∗E-mail address : [email protected] Nowadays, due to the precise measurement of the gauge coupling constants at LEP, it ...

There are two related schools attempting at a lattice theory of quantum gravity, dynamical triangulation and Regge quantum gravity. We concentrate on the latter approach and refer to [1,2] for excellent reviews of the former framework. In particular we investigate different formulations, all of them based on the original work by Regge [3], namely conventional Regge gravity [4,5], a group theore...

A geometric construction of the Riemann scalar curvature in Regge calculus

The Riemann scalar curvature plays a central role in Einstein’s geometric theory of gravity. We describe a new geometric construction of this scalar curvature invariant at an event (vertex) in a discrete spacetime geometry. This allows one to constructively measure the scalar curvature using only clocks and photons. Given recent interest in discrete pre-geometric models of quantum gravity, we b...
